Axiom GB Commissioning Cross-Docking Cell in Chicago
Axiom GB has completed the commissioning of phase 1 of the cross-docking cell equipped with a SICK DWS in Chicago. The Axiom GB cross-docking with DWS has been designed to handle 6000 packages per hour across a wide range of types and sizes. The DWS (dimension; weigh & scan) cell from SICK (UK) Ltd enables each package to be checked against customer entered data and logged to the system and customers’ database.
After 3-days of initial commissioning, the cell has been handed over to the customer for controlled ramp-up and final debugging. Currently running off two of the three inducts, the cell has been achieving the targeted throughputs with total daily volumes >21000 packages already achieved.
The cell comprises 55 separate conveyors from across the Axiom GB range, including ZLP, belt and MBC merge sections (see the new design introduction on the LinkedIn post). Eventually the cell will be equipped with two of Axiom GB’s Sliding Shoe Sorters as part of phase 2. The first sorter will categorise packages deemed as exceptions (out of size; no-barcode read; contain dangerous goods etc.) down 4-diverts. The second, the final courier, sorter will initially be installed with 6-diverts to classify the packages by outbound courier selection. The sorter has been designed to allow easier expansion to 12-divert (double-sided) should the customer require this.
The cross-docking cell is a prime example of an Axiom GB material handling system incorporating many of the key attributes of the companies’ offering; conveyors, merge, control, third-party equipment integration and data-handling and communication with the customers’ cloud based systems through API’s. The cross-docking cell control utilises Siemens plc equipped with Siemens VSD’s (variable speed drives or inverters), all connected via profinet networking allowing remote access to each of the drives parameters. With the secure VPN connection, remote support and continual process improvements can be efficiently offered.
